which first upgrade or migration?

By mhamm85 ·
I'm working as an intern for a company and we're going to move our sharepoint server and upgrading it to 2010. However, I haven't found anything yet on which would make my job easier, upgrading it first and then moving it or moving it then upgrading it?

Go with the working solution

Since it is already up and working, migrate it first then you have a known standard to compare it to. Once you are satisfied the migration was succesful then look at the upgrade piece. If you upgrade first, you are throwing extra variables in to the mix and extra variables = extra headaches.

Go with Brian on this one.

If the port goes wrong, you still have the existing system, if teh upgrade goes wrong you still have the existing system.
Now what happens if the upgrade of the existing system goes wrong, aside from a very short internship....
The first rule of all rules for this task, always gave a proven backout procedure. In this case plug the old system back in, while you figure out went wrong...

Tip from the bitten, if some arse tells you they can just restore it, make them prove it first. Lots of business have back up policies, you don't have to take your mittens off to count the ones who have restore policies....
