Which Fonts can I delete?

By russ912 ·
How do I know which fonts I can delete without affecting the default fonts used by applications. I recently deleted some only to find that Windows and many programs had a whole new look. I tried to look under properties, but no info there. Simply finding similar types wasn't enough.

Thanks,
Russ

When windows installs on a sys it loads fonts that the sys uses, & popular fonts that are commonly used by people. When an app is installed if the font that is used is not already loaded, it loads it automaticlly. Why do you want to remove fonts from sys?

In multiple articles I've read about speeding up Windows 9x performance, all have mentioned deleting excess fonts. I don't personally know that it works, but there seems to be a consensus out there.

Install Font Smart from Hewlett Packard, its shows different smarticons for different fonts type and off course a unique icon for system font. The software may be available with the 6P/6MP Laser priter Driver

There is no sure way to know what can be deleted without changing the look of a program. In fact, most programs use more than one font, which make matters even more complicated. In your fonts folder in control panel you can at least distinguish between system fonts (those with the A) and fonts installed by other programs ( those with the TT) All those fonts are used by programs at some point. Why would a program install fonts that won't be used? It's a programming waste of time. The only fonts you can safely delete are those that you intentionally installed.

I guess you are deleting fonts to speed up startup times? I once added a CD full of fonts and nearly doubled the time it took to load WinNT. Basically the others are right, unless you know specifically which fonts came with which programs, you will risk changing you "look" on many apps. In terms of your Window "look" check the screen properties (right click on your desktop), then go to the Appearence tab. Under the Item drop box you can select various parts of your Windows layout and the applicable fonts.
