Which hard drive to pick?

By xraymyles ·
I'm building/purchasing a new P4 2.4GHZ 512 cache 533 fsb puter and am still picking drives. The board will support RAID and ATA133. If I have to give up one spec on a hard drive, which one looses me less speed? ATA133 or the 8mb buffer which would be reduced to a 2mb buffer.
WD makes ATA 100 drives with 8mb buffers while Maxtor makes ATA133 with 2mb or 8mb buffers. I'm having a hard time finding a Maxtor smaller than 200gig with the 8mb buffer however.
any help appreciated.

Never had the luxury, but I've always got an opinion, go with the 8meg cache, with files constantly getting larger, the cache will play a bigger role than the bus speed.

Thanks for the reply. It's been a long time since I've dealt with puter hardware. Like early 90's and I know it'd changed a lot. Gonna go with the concensus here and get a 8mb buffer drive.

The ATA 133/100 specs are only theoretical burst rates/through put. In actuality a HD will maintain 45-60MB/s for IDE drives. Unless you're attaching multiple drives to the same IDE channel go with the larger cache option.

Want a confusing answer? It really depends on IF you will be using that RAID functionality and in what mode you happen to use it. Go w/ the larger buffer, but what's really more important in the choice of a drive is warranty (and ease of dealing w/ a failure's replacement (they all fail eventually), which wasn't addressed in your question- Maxtor get's my vote in that case). Personal or business PC? Normal usage? 200 GB? You starting up your own Napster type service???

HI. Nope, no napster here. LOL, just couldn't find both specs in smaller drive. Now I can happily buy a smaller drive with the larger buffer. I've dealt with WD in past with no problems. Time to shop again, oh, this is a home puter. Thanks,
Myles
