Which Is More Powerful

By tptbusines_98 ·
Hello,
I have the following:

1. Compaq Proliant 5500, Quad Xeon Processors at 733 MHz and 1 Gig of RAM.

2. 1 Compaq Proliant DL580, Dual PIII-733 MHz and 1 Gig of RAM.

3. 1 Compaq Proliant DL380, Dual PIII-733 MHz and 1 Gig of RAM.

Which of the 3 computers is more powerful for web hosting? What is the "best" practice for configuring the 3 systems for web hosting?? What is the "best" for configuring the 3 systems for HA???

Thank you,

The quad Xeon

by sdrucker In reply to Which Is More Powerful

is the most "powerful" of those for web hosting. Depending on what you are wanting to do, (how large of a database your website is dealing with) you might be better off stealing the ram from the two PIII's and making the Xeon system 3 gigabytes.

I am not sure what HA??? is, but linux/apache should easily be able to handle the multi-processor capabilities.

I hope this helps.

HUM the Xeon uses EEC DDR2 RAM

by OH Smeg In reply to The quad Xeon

and the P3's use SDRAM so it's not possible to steal the RAM from the P3's and use them with the Xeon.

Though I completely agree more RAM with the Xeon would not hurt any.

Which Is More Powerful: The Quad Xeon

by tptbusines_98 In reply to The quad Xeon

Hello,
"Thank You", your information was helpful.
I want to use the 3 systems for web hosting in a high-availibility (HA) cluster. As of right now, no database will be over 2 Gigabytes, and the databases will sit on seperate servers.

Well as stated above the Quad Core Xeon is the most powerful

by OH Smeg In reply to Which Is More Powerful

It has 4 Cores running at 733 MHZ which are actually faster than the P3 733 MHZ Speed and these only have 1 core or CPU.

As for configuring the 3 systems for Web Hosting I'm not sure what you want to do here is that configure a Cluster?

Also what are you actually hosting? If it's big you will probably need more RAM in the Xeon as 1 gig isn't much and may even be less that is needed if it is 1 X 1 GIG Stick as the M'Board supports Dual Chanel RAM which needs 2 Sticks of Identical RAM to allow the CPU to run at full speed. If you have 2 X 512 MEG Sticks the M'Board is correctly configured though more RAM wouldn't hurt..

If you where to post back with what it is that you want to achieve we may be able to help you. Also you'll need a OS that can handle all 4 Cores so that would be Windows Server 2003 or Vista if you want a Windows Solution and any Modern Linux if you want a fast easy to administer system.
