Assuming a full-time designer earns/costs USD 100.000 a year, the difference between a budget-friendly laptop of, say, USD 800 or a refurbished desktop of, say 300, if both last 5 years, is USD 100 a year, that’s exactly 1 promille of their earnings/costs. That’s peanuts.

I’d concentrate on other things than costs.

You should decide what applications you plan to use to achieve your goal. For instance, the Apple/Mac environment has been famous for its photo editing software/applications more than MS Windows. But the same software/application may not be available on both platforms. Not enough information provided.

Simply put, the cheapest is sometimes not the best if it causes you to put in more effort to achieve your goal.

Agree with birdmantd! Software compatibility is key. Focus on what programs you need, then target hardware that runs them smoothly.

I personally think that buying a Chromebook on eBay would be the best option ,but it is also a risky option, you could buy a Chromebook from places like Intel or dell but it will cost significantly more money.
