Which modem driver do I download?

By dana803 ·
I experience frequent disconnects while on the internet. I have a Compaq Presario 2286 with Windows 98 purchased 2/14/99. This is my home computer. It has a Rockwell HCF 56K Data Fax PCI Modem with a firmware version number of xxx.134. I can't remember how I found the number. I just remembered the last 3 digits. From what I've read, I need to upgrade and http://808news.com/56k/hcf7.htm probably contains the upgrade I want, but WHICH ONE? Can someone give me a good first guess, because I'm notconfident I can go back to my original unless someone can tell me how to back it up properly. Compaq gave me no capability to reinstall certain programs on my computer. The backup drive seems to insist on restoring the whole computer to factory presets! I desperately want to avoid that. Thank you.

Based on the information you provided and in checking with Compaq if you will browse to this link:

http://web14.compaq.com/falco/sp_results.asp?recid=SP8897

You should retrieve the appropriate Compaq Softpaq update and drive for this modem.

Thank you for the reference. I found this earlier, too, but in the text file, my 2286 model is not listed as being effected by this. Also, the firmware version listed is the same one I already have.

Normally, when updating drivers, you get the newest one... but in my experience with those modems, updating the driver doesn't do very much... Most problems those modems have is due to noise on the phone line...
(or somewhere down the line someonehas attached a digital device to the phone line preventing the modem from getting a v.90 connect, making the modem fallback to v.34)

Thank you for your input. I connect at 40K consistently all the time. I understand that's average for a 56k modem on a regular phone line. My disconnects are so bothersome, I can't even stay online for more than a couple minutes sometimes. My husband never experiences disconnects (same phone line), and his 56K modem connects at 36K consistently. From my research, my disconnects can very well be minimized by getting a driver that ends in at least .135.

Go to http://winmodem.sugar-river.net/list.htm. It has a whole list of modems for various computers, and compaq is listed. It has one exe file. Download this file and execute it. After reboot, update the modem driver. I do not think it should give you any problems.

I have a newer compaq, but I had the same problem with disconnets. I had the telephone company check my line. You may have to cal them several times. I also downloaded net.medic. It is a free software program that will give information about your cpu, modem, internet, and ISP. Good luck.

I found my problem. It's MSN. If I use any other ISP, I don't have any disconnect problems at all. Thank you for the ideas with net.medic, etc.
