WHICH ONE IS A BETTER SERVER?

By davidc ·
I would like to find out a better server between a Dell and a Gateway Technically.
The Specifications are as follows;

INTEL PIII OR IV 1GHZ Processor
256RAM PC133 ECC SDRAM scalable to 2GB ECC,
DUAL PROCESSOR Capable
Min 18GB HDD
and the rest of a sever`s feature.

Thank you

WHICH ONE IS A BETTER SERVER?

From my experience I would have to say go with the Dell, as far as the Machine's themselves go if you compare like to like they're pretty much equal in performance. If performance is an important issue to you there are a few sites out there with bench mark test results that you can review. Also the companies themselves may have the Benchmark test results, when comparing test results it is important to look at the type of test done. What are the ratings in MIPS and FLOPS, etc. For the big difference between the two it that Dell seems to do a better job standing behind their products. They have completely redefined the way they handle customer service and have dedicated themselves to it. The little bit of experience I have in trying towork with Gateway's Customer Service did not leave a favorable impression in my mind. So it's really about what's important to you. You may want to consider what your going to be using this for as well. If cost is a key consideration you may wantto go with one of their rebuilts, both companies offer some decent stuff that way if you can find what your looking for, and they both will stand behind it. Compaq is just as good as well and the same hold true for their refurbs.

good luck,

I'll throw my $.02 in. I agree with Mike in that it comes down to what kind of support you're looking for. Hardware and specs wise they are probably going to come pretty close to one another. The next thing to look at it upgrading. You don't want to design a system that paints you into a corner when you need more RAM, storage, or other expansion.

Here's my personal experiences with the companies. I've owned a Gateway desktop pc for nearly 3 years. In that time a new keyboard is all they've had to send me. Thier tech support did a good job, I thought.

In my job I have a Dell laptop. In less then a year it's gone through 3 motherboards, a keyboard, and a new battery. The jury is still out on whether or not it's fixed. But, their tech support was quick to answer the phone and they certainly don't have any qualms with sending replacement parts (even if they might be defective).

So. I'd look for who has the best offer at the time, how long they'll "hold your hand" afteryou own it, and how important those to factors are compaired to each other.

Good luck.

Jake

I'll chip in a couple of comments too....

As long as you buy a "server class" machine, there's really not a lot of difference between the major manufacturers. We bought 17 Gateway servers 3 years ago, and not a single one has had the first hardware failure yet.

We also have IBM Netfinities that have been running 24/7 for over 4 years.

Bad taste in my mouth over Compaq and HP. Both companies make the upgrade path convoluted and expensive.

Guess it boils down to which company can give you the best support. Since you are not located in the United States, you had better do some research on the local support services each offers. Neither Gateway nor Dell is known as a true international company, and I've had friends in S. Korea and
Singapore who have ditched both in favor of
IBM.

I think it's no contest. Dell is far superior to Gateway. The only other server I consider is IBM (except, of course, the one's I build myself. They're the best!). Good luck!
