Which tape backup to use???

By Rick H ·
We are currently using a ColoradoII backup system which uses travan 5 Gig tapes. We are using win98 and are on a lantastic network. The tape drive will no longer initalize new tapes or recognize previous tapes. Can this be fixed?? I know they have been discontinued so I can't by a new one, if I replace it I would like to find something that will read our current tapes.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Rick

Colorardo was bought by HP.

You can try looking at HP for newer travan drives for being able to read the older tapes.

We use a Sony SCSI Dat drive, seems alright.
We had that error, the short version of help is to, uninstall old drivers, and either find an update, or just reload the old ones. I think we were told that something had corrupted them, but they couldn't say what.

Good luck
Fred

Can't offer any help on replacements, but when we had ours go belly up, it turned out there was a corrupted registry entry and just removing the entire key and then reinstalling the drivers took care of it.

I guess this is hp colorado 5GB internal travan drive, right? When you go to the web page,
(http://www.hp.com/cposupport/swindexes/hpcolorado9832_swen.html) you're going to find a diagnostic tool which you can check the drive without using the software. You can make the read, write and read&write tests. If you can't find any errors, I suggest you to uninstall the software, turn the PC off, unplug the device, then boot and install back the software, then the software will want you to boot. You need to shut down the PC, then plug the device so that the software finds and installs its own drivers. It's also possible that you need a cleaning cartridge. You should have no difficulties if the test passes and the software is installed correctly +you are sure that your cartridges work fine and compatible with the drive...
