      Lucky,
I have personally tested several anti-viral tools like Norton’s and McAfee and Sophos and others. They all work excellent and I can’t put one above the other on virus detection.
The trick is that the definitions for the viruses has to be kept up-to-date.
I check for updates on a daily basis. If they have a new definition file, I install it on all the machines.
      That’s viruses/worms/trojans
As for hacking, you need to have a tool that will check to see if protocols are being accessed on your machine. I tend to like and recommend Network Flight Recorder’s BackOfficer. It’s inexpensive and highly effective.
You don’t mention what the operating system is on your PC. Because you say PC, I assume that it’s not Unix, Linux or Macintosh, so you must be running Windows.
Your Operating System needs to be just as up-to-date on patches, as your virus protection. AND your browser, probably Netscape or Internet Explorer, needs to have it’s updates. As well, programs like Outlookhave patches because

All of my answer didn’t fit: Here’s the rest:

Your Operating System needs to be just as up-to-date on patches, as your virus protection. AND your browser, probably Netscape or Internet Explorer, needs to have it’s updates. As well, programs like Outlook have patches because of their vulnerabilities.
No one quality brandname can offer you that service. Well, take that back, it’s offered, but the initiative to look for those updates and patches for security need to come from you.
Personal use, or business use, it’s the same. I hope that helps. If you want more info, feel free to email me.

For about $59.95 US, you can purchase Norton Internet Security from Symantec. You can get more info at http://www.symantec.com. This includes Norton Anti-Virus 2000 and a newer version of AtGuard firewall.

For personal use I would just go with the internet security from Norton. If you are in a business environment then Norton Corporate Enterprise Solution 7.x is a great choice. It will automatically check for your virus updates and distro them to all servers/workstations as well as update the actual software. Pricing varies depending on volume but you can get it from $20 – 50 per copy.

I would agree that the most important thing to do with antivirus software is to update the DAT files. As for security, I’ve found ZoneAlarm to be a very good program, it’s available free for personal use from http://www.zonelabs.com and it’s $19.95 for business use.

First – check out the replies I gave to Fred’s question “Best and easiest network virus software?” then check out the web site

      http://www.woodyswatch.com

These are the same people who brought us the book “The Mother of all Windows Books.”

I found their update on the Outlook e-mail security update to be an eye-opener … apparently M$’s fix is to declare certain file extensions as so dangerous as to prevent you from getting at them.

So for example, suppose you have been sharing Access files via e-mail … if you install this update, you will not be able to do that anymore … if the attachment has an extension that could be used by viruses, it ought to connect to AV of your choice, but M$ simply blocks access, not only to youbut also to your AV … check out the full details in

Personnally I use NORTONs stuff. Professionally I also use NORTONs on my workstations & my servers. .

“Insatiable” has answered your question, and then some. You need to remember that no one piece of software will ‘secure’ your system, so much as your continued diligence. You need to cover all bases: Internal & External. You need to train your customers to use safe practices. You need to lay out your hardware with security in mind from the onset. Not as an afterthought.

      Good luck, smooth sailing.

      enjoy 🙂

For business use, Sophos seems to be the best around. They offer updats via e-mail as soon as they have countered any new virus. Also, they send monthly updates for all versions of all known new viruses. Also, depending on the software you are running, frequently check the M$ website for updates and patches to their applications. Norton puts out very good home use virus protection, with updates available via the web. Sophos is rather pricey, but worth the $$ for a safe network. Norton costs$40-60 depending on where you buy. To protect your network from hackers, check out some of M$ BackOffice products. For home PC protection, you’ll need a program to monitor your internet connection to see if anyone is trying to come in. Personally, I’m not sure of a personal PC product that is good for this, but try Insatiable’s suggestion. Finally, the M$ Internet Explorer/Outlook fix for attachments is pretty harsh, but it’s effective. If you use it, just remember that you be blocked fromveiwing or even reci

To my best of knowledge about virus protection Nortons is the best, and I would also recomend not to invest in mcafee as it is not a program for disposing viruses, only dececting them and sending out warnings to others.

There is a lot of good advice here but I detect some personal preferences in the answers. The major AV players on the market to consider are Trend Micro, Symantec, and NAI (McAfee). These are the top three for the AV industry. That is an undisputable fact. Symantec was setting a good pace the last few years but have little to no showing for 2000. Trend Micro has quite a showing as well to include ICSA certification for Notes environments. NAI (my personal preference) has a very impressivelisting of Security Product Awards with an excellent enterprise management utility. Therefore, for anyone not intimately familiar with your environment to try to tell you what to use is an insult. For that reason, I will not try to sell you on thesolution I’m using, you should try each of their products to see what best fits your specific environment. All three offer excellent coverage on the major platforms as well as auto updates and auto upgrades via internet or ftp. I am and will continue to evaluate over the next six months these three for my environment. Remember this simple process; Assess, Design, Reassess, Test, and then Deploy. For more info, you can contact me via email.
