IT Employment

Which would be the best area of IT consulting for grad employee?

By Buddy23 ·
Hi there,

I have just started employment for one of the bigger IT consulting companies in a graduate analyst role. I am just wondering where you guys think I should try to steer my career towards? What do you think will be the best thing to fill a blank canvas for the next five years? Thanks in advance for your help!

IMHO - 5 years is a bit ambitious at this point ...

I'm assuming this is your first full-time employment.

As such I'd advise you to try and get your fingers burned as much as possible, by taking on everything that is chucked your way.

After you've got a years experience you may even find your preferences have changed. This, I am recounting from personal experience, some thirty years ago.

Don't be too anxious to commit yourself to a definitive career path just yet. :)

Do what you love.

Decide which part of the consulting realm you enjoy the most and run with it.
Do you like programming?
Do you enjoy installing servers and making 3rd party software work with them?
Do you love to desing and troubleshoot network traffic and security?

Each of those areas is completely different. There is always overlap, and it's good to know a bit about them all but they are also different directions that you can go.

Since you have just started it maay take some time to decide where you want to go. The most important thing is to go with what you enjoy the most. Choose Wisely.
If you choose poorly you'll get stuck in a rut that is no fun to work in.

Best of luck to you in your career.
