I just saw a headline stating that point and though it would fit with Foxtrot and Tango. I personally think all reality shows are a waste.

Who said the South wouldn’t rise again?

        Edited for nationality inaccuracy.

        • #2898281

i think the South rose a long time ago

          by ansugisalas ·

In reply to Hey, we got a Dane saying "y’all"!

The south has an amazing and diverse culture that just can’t be kept down… Whoever says it’s down must be wearing their spectacle the wrong way around 😀
BTW. I have no idea if it (y’all) can actually be used like I did – but I feel like “you” is first a singular, and only then a plural, so I like to use y’all instead for specific plural address 😉
P.P.S. I am Danish (the non-pastry variety – unless I’ve let myself go) but I do live in Finland

          Which is incorrect

          by scndtnr ·

In reply to i think the South rose a long time ago

The plural of y’all is “all y’all”.

          Anything beyond that is conjecture.

          Who’d a’thunk?

          by ansugisalas ·

In reply to Which is incorrect

I’d a’thunk that “all y’all” is for specifying an absolute plural (all-encompassing), sort of you “every one of you (is going down!)”.
But it’s fascinating. BTW, now that you’re explaining, is it possible to say “y’alls” like I did or was that just completely wrong?
Anyway, I still like to use y’all when I wanna talk to more than one, but not necessarily all of the potential recipients

I had it pretty good on both counts (although y’all’s/y’alls is contested), now I will do my happy dance. Y’all may avert y’alls eyes (ouch – somehow I think that last one ran afoul of a distributive reading 😀 ).

        • #2898204

          "y’alls"?

          by charliespencer ·

Your original quote indicating possession – “y’alls comments” – should have been “y’all’s comments”.

I can’t stand the phonetic substitutions used where I work. Part numbers beginning with “M” and “N” are “Mary” and “Nancy”. “J” parts are just “J numbers”; no phonetic equivalent.

But they will, you know. That’s how offended people operate. Offended people, tone trolls, and concerned parents.

It’s like we hand them a coconut, and they spend all damn day opening the damn coconut… with the swearing and the hitting of the fingers with the hammer and all.
And then they get the coconut open, and inside there’s this ugly troll doll – which pees on them, ballistic-like.

What’s not to love about that setup? 😀

Its the end results which are bothersome.

          by seanferd ·

In reply to That’s what I like about it…

Making people who are searching to be offended work for their payoff is always fun. There’s a certain minor bit of shady-frood involved. It highlights their hypocrisy and keeps them busy working on one thing, rather than ten others.

Its when the rule-maker’s behavior is to default to appeasing the whiners (as a result of a complaint, or preemptively) by banning all sorts of things that it becomes truly offensive infantilizing of adults.

Not saying that I’m terribly annoyed by the bannination of Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. I’m just hoping that it isn’t a continuing trend, especially if it starts extending beyond mere “foul language”.

Just for clarity, I’m speaking of a wider world beyond TR here. I know TR is what it is, and why, mostly. But if Whiskey is offensive enough to be filtered, then so is crap pseud-logic, lies, made-up stuff, and poorly examined opinion presented as fact that is constantly in these fora. That, and the constant spam.

But whatever. I can ignore most of it (besides the high spam level and its effects) and read thing I find worthwhile like an adult. (Although adults have no monopoly on this ability, it is a common turn of phrase, based on the assumption that “adults” are “mature” and that these mean anything other than in a biological sense.) So, “as a reasonable person” would probably be a better choice.

There will always be ways to foil those that have their minds in the gutter… Like HAL said it means “Want That Furniture?”.
          Or “Watch that Football!”
Or “Welders take first” … cake, obviously.
