Whos user got the file open?

By NiceMaster ·
Server is NT4.0, Client is W2000. I am an Admin on a Client machine, is there a way to check who got a file open. On the old win3.1, the program WINFILE.EXE can do this, and this same program works on NT4.0, but not on W2000. May be a third party software or something.

Thanks

Whos user got the file open?

On the NT 4.0 Server there is a program called Server Manager. With this utility you can view connections, open files, etc. I'm PRETTY sure you can copy this program to a client machine and run it. Worth trying anyway.
Good Luck

Whos user got the file open?

Open a Command Prompt and type in:
NET FILE
That will list all open files and who has them open.
You can also open up the Shared Folders MMC Snap-in to view open files.

hope this helps

Tried NET FILE on my client machine, and does not seems to work. It says "NO ENTRIES IN THE LIST", not quite sure what that means. Also, not quite sure about shared folders MMC Snap-In, can you elaborate on that please, I would like to try it.

Thanks

I use a freeware from www.merxsoft.com called ofl.exe. It is a small (56K) file that can do many things. I use it to find out who has what open (even remotely), I can also close open files. Everything can be done through the command line, or through batch files.
