    why 9 pin on VGA (15 pin HD) plugged?

    older consoles have the 9 pin on the vga video port plugged.

    most newer monitors have a monitor cable with all 15 pins including the 9 pin. therefore cannot connect to them.

    according to vga 15pin hd pinout specs, the 9 pin is not used.

    are there adapters available? or an extreme measure, just break off 9 pin?

      Hi when you say console do mean a games console ?. If not then some big PC manufacturers ie Compaq, HP etc had there own connection standards, otherwise 9pin was either CGA, EGA, or PGA the only one that could possibly be used with a VGA monitor is the PGA due to the scanning frquencies.

      Sounds like you have an old IBM PS-2 with the VGA feature card. For customers who have to replace monitors, we provide a short VGA extender cable with pin 9 removed so it will plug into the IBM VGA card. This functions as an “adapter” cable. We have the ability to make them up in a one foot length, but I am sure that VGA extender cables are still available in most computer stores. The quickest solution would be to buy one and remove the male pin #9.

        The reason I recommend purchasing a VGA extender cable is that we have had to replace the connector for some of our customers after they tried “modifying” the pins in the connector. If you are experienced, just remove pin # 9. If you are not, VGAextender cables are a lot cheaper than replacing the connector on the monitor cable.

      pin #9 on vga connectors is plugged on many adapter to prevent users from plugging in a device that could blow the video adapter. some pacific rim monitors leave the pin in the monitor cable connector. it is an unused and unconnected pin, it can be broken off the monitor connector with care.
