Why 98 won’t connect to a network share?

    Locked

    by wmounsey ·

I am running a Windows NT 4.0 w/SP6 network and have a 98 laptop. When I have the laptop connected directly to the network, I do not have any problems. When I use dial up networking using RAS, I can connect to the network. I can browse network neighborhood. I can also get email from the exchange server.

When I try double clicking on a server with a network share, I error out. But when the laptop is connected locally on the network there are no problems.

Can anyone give me a hand here?

Try checking your dial in permissions on the windows nt server you are dialing into….you can check this in the user manager for domains….make sure you have the correct dialin permissions set for the user

Dial in permissions have been granted. I can connect, check email on exchange, and browse the network. Just can’t access network shares.

When you dial in you should be promted for a Network login.
If you logged in to the network locally, I’m assuming the “Log on to an NT Domain” is checked in the setup.
Somewhere the User ID and password are being cached, bypassing the network login when you dial up.
Sometimes if the phone lines are noisey you will not be authenticated.
Sorry there is no easy answer but hope this gives you some place to start.

Yes… I am prompted for a network login and I log onto the network. I can see all of the computers on the network as well. I just can’t access any network shares.

        Thanks

Maybe you have to set the RAS connection to use netbios?

I experienced similar problems awhile back. Assuming TCP/IP dial-up settings for DNS and WINS are in place and you are setup using a workgroup with the same name as your domain… The solution for me was to make sure I logged into Windows ’98 using the same ID and password as the one I have on the Domain.
Try this before dial-in. Select Start, Log off userxxx. Then Login using your Domain ID and password, then dial-in using the same credentials. Hope this helps…

Yes.. DNS and WINS settings are in place, I forgot to mention that… And the work group is the same as the domain. And I have the login on the laptop set to “Client for Microsoft Networks” – Sorry for not mentioning that as well.

It seems that you may have a dial-in permission but i doubt that you have the permission to access the server’s network share remotely or say no access permission when logging in remotely or through RAS. Have the administrator,if its not you, to re-check your access permission to that particular network share in the server.
