Why can I recieve email and not send

By mikez1017 ·
I am using Outlook 2000 as my email client. I can recieve email but I cannot send it. I am connected to the internet through Proxy Server 2.0. I set myself up with access to smtp and pop3 protocols and I get a message that says:

The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was 'mikez1017@yahoo.com'. Subject 'Test', Account: 'Michael YaHoo', Server: 'smtp.snet.net', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '550 5.7.1 <mikez1017@yahoo.com>... Relaying denied. IP name lookup failed [207.76.75.154]', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC79

I also tried to use outlook express and the same thing happened.

Why can I recieve email and not send

In order to avoid being relay points for spam, mail servers are getting more discriminating about whose mail they accept. In this case, you are using a server called smtp.snet.net. When your mail client tries to send mail to this server, the server tries to look up your IP address to make sure that you are one of his legitimate customers. Since you are not logged using an snet.net account (I bet), and your mail is not for someone on snet.net, the server is rejecting your attempt (that is what Relaying denied means).

Another issue with some servers is that the server contacting them must be listed in DNS, and listed in reverse DNS so that the server can look up the originator by number. Your proxy server address should be listed in DNS to make this happen.

The easy fix is to use a mail server which belongs to the ISP you are dialed in on. If you are at work, you need to use the ISP that the company connection is using.

Good luck

I had a problem like this.

Is the Proxy Server connecting to the internet to a different ISP?

You smtp mail is being sent to snet.net and if the proxy server is not connecting to snet.net, they may not accept e-mail from another ISP's login.
That was my problem. My ISP changed the SMTP mail to only allow people who are logged into the internet thru them to send mail.

I could receive all the e-mail I wanted from my ISP but could not send anything because of this restriction.
