Why can they see my c directory ?

By dancary ·
I have received several e-mails telling me that my computer is vulnerable from internet hackers. The e-mail displays all my top level folders and files at the c level on Win2K. I'd like to know how this is done and what I can do to prevent this. The ad is asking me to buy an internet eraser product. But I'm really concerned/curious about how they can get my computer to return the top level directory info.
Thanks!

Why can they see my c directory ?

Additional comment: My computer is 'behind' a Linksys DSL router, which is suppposed to give some firewall protection... The router has the ISP IP address, and the computer has a local intranet dynamic IP address. I suppose they can see all my computers on the intranet...

Additional question: Is there any tools in the TechRepublic ToolBox that will help me figure this out? Maybe a 'browse my own computer from the net' tool?

Well, the only thing I can think of, is that at some point, you visited a web page that gave you the little "Install a component" window. You can probably identify this windows by the checkbox at the bottom that says "Always trust content from xxxxxInc". If you say yes to any of these windows, you are giving them permission to install an ocx or some other program in your computer. By doing so, every time you visit their page, they can start a new instance of this component from the HTML code, and gain access to your local hard drive. Probably an online antivirus or something. Hope that helps, good luck!

Most probably it's a script running in the e-mail. "They" can't relly see your files.

Are you absolutely sure they are showing YOUR hard drive? Windows 2000 has a standard foler hierarchy that will be the same on any computer until it is modified. Unless the email shows a customized folder hierarchy that can't be mistaken for any other Windows 2000 installation other than yours (i.e. folders YOU have added), I would bet this is an advertising gimick relying on scare tactics.

Go to www.grc.com and click on "shilds up and then click on shilds up again. Click on test my shields and see what it says.

If you have ports opened in your firewall, they may be able to access you internal network. You need to dig out yourfirewall documentation and check into how your setup your firewall.

The above is supposed to read "shields up".

2) If you are behind a LinkSys DSL Router, http into it and see which ports are opened.

If grc says that you are secure, I would essentially forget about the ads that you are receiving.
