Why CDRW trays opens

By wardenpilot ·
On a stand alone machine,my cdrw tray opens. It will open on boot up and then sometimes while the machine is running. Once it opens, it remains open until I close it. I can close it and later it will open again.
The OS is W-98, I have one CD and one CDRW. The CDRW(Memorex)is the only one that opens on it's own. I've changed the cable from IDE master to piggy-backed on the hard drive. Nothing changed, it still opens. It copies CD's properly. What is causing this problem?

Why CDRW trays opens

Taking a stab in the dark here.

Try going into ht eproperties of the device inside Device Manager (accessible from Control Panel-> System) and disabling Auto insert notification.

It sounds like the drive is being polled for status at certain points and is responding as if an eject command was issued. This may also point to the CDRW possibly bein faulty (but if it works .. who cares)

Good luck

Feeling adventurous? :) I have run into this type of problem on regular CDRom drives, I have found that it is almost always a result of solder splatters on the circuit board that were not cleaned off at the factory, sloppy quality control. You will have to open the drive to check for this, which will void your warranty, if it is still covered. If you have it, use the proper flux remover for circuit boards, and an old soft toothbrush to clean the circuit board with, if you don't have the flux remover(or can't get it) then you can use rubbing alcohol(it just doesn't clean as nicely). Be careful handling the mylar cables, and you should clean both sides of the board if possible. The only other option is to return the drive to your supplier and get a replacement.
