Why does computer lose time while on?

By eheller1 ·
I have seen several computers that lose time - from a few minutes to over an hour in a 24 hour period - while the machine is running. Turn it off and it keeps perfect time, so it is not the CMOS battery. Why is this happening?

Why does computer lose time while on?

javascript, activeX and VBscripts and many other hidden programs running on your PC not only change your time but extract information from your PC and deliver it to a remote server.

Another possibility is also that the servers that the PC is connected to gives it a time which may differ from original by mere minutes or even different years!

Play full viruses also do these kinds of things without harming the computers

There may be other hidden programs that I have never seen.

The possibility are endless.

All these things are true, but I think the problems is most likely a bad system clock on the motherboard.

This answer pointed me in the right direction. It is the system clock on the motherboard that is causing the error. The real time clock is ok since the computer does not lose time when off.
