Why does it hang?

By mslaffsalot ·
I was working on a friend?s computer and hit a wall. It seems that when running Scandisk and/or Defrag the system locks up. When I hit ctrl-alt-del the task menu shows that neither application is (not responding.) It also won't run hwinfo.exe.
Does anyone a clue as to what I can do now? I almost feel compelled to fdisk and format and reload Win98 SE. All advice would be appreciated.

You can try running scandisk and defrag in safe mode.

Or you can press control, alt, delete and end task on everything except explorer, systray and scandisk.

You can try booting off a win98 bootdisk that has scandisk.exe on it and run scandiskfrom there.

Safe mode would probably be your best bet right now. I cant think of any other reason for it to hang up like it does. Although, if you cant find the conflict in safe mode, with win98 you almost have to just format and do everything all over from scratch. Seems to be the common trend with Win 9x.
