Why does it hang?

By mslaffsalot ·
I was working on a friend?s computer and hit a wall. It seems that when running Scandisk and/or Defrag the system locks up. When I hit ctrl-alt-del the task menu shows that neither application is (not responding.) It also won't run hwinfo.exe.
Does anyone a clue as to what I can do now? I almost feel compelled to fdisk and format and reload Win98 SE. All advice would be appreciated.

Why does it hang?

Well lets see there is a bit of information missing that might help in diagnosis of problem, such as how big is the drive or drives involved?, is this the first time either program has been run? and which switches are being used? is this a direct install or a cloned/ghosted drive? and how are you actually determining that either program has actually stopped running.

The first suggestion is to run them from the Safe mode, especially if this is the first time this drive is being analyzed. This eliminates all the clutter of the interface and other interruptive drivers along with the power managment aspects.

Now with Scandisk - if the drive is big, as most all are now, and your doing the thorough scan it can really seem like it has stopped but hasn't - are the numbers incrementing? are there any indicators showing? If not, and your running from SAFE then you may want to check Microsofts Knowledge base as there are several know problems that Scandisk can run into that might be related to your particular hardware setup.

With Defrag - it can really depend on how much ram and freespace is available, whether there are some huge files, (it will look like it stopped but is really just trying to manage that massive file) and if you have the "reorganize" the drive switch on of advanced features - which I never recommend, that one can be a real killer and I have seen it run for DAYS trying to organize things.

Those are what I would look at - but then completely redoing a drive never is a bad idea and makes stuff nice and neat.

Hope that helps you.

Oops - forgot about hwinfo the correct syntax for running that is hwinfo /ui from the run box. does about the same thing as msinfo32 in most cases.

he drives are 1.5 GB and 503 MB respectively. It is not the first time they have been run and no switches are used. Thanks for the help, but any other info is appreciated.

Check to see what apps are running in the background
Disable screen savers
Check the antivirus configuration,to make sure it is not running in the background

Try running them in safe mode first if that doesnt work try running check disk from a dos prompt by typing chkdsk at the prompt. or even try scandisk from dos prompt. also it may be just seeming to take too long because the drive is either very large or very old and slow. maybe try reinstalling the system tools for windows98se in add/remove software windows setup tab. if all else fails try formating and get Winme, the defrag is 3 times faster. i swear good luck
