Why does my screen go black for a second when a video starts?

Hi! I’ve been experiencing an issue for a while where my laptop screen momentarily goes black when videos play. This can be Youtube, a video ad, sometimes gifs, seemingly anything with a moving picture. It doesn’t happen *every* time and is inconsistent in frequency (right now it’s happening often, last week barely at all, first started months ago). The screen only goes black for 1-2 seconds and it’s only when a video first begins rather than repeatedly or randomly. I can’t think of any changes to my laptop that would correlate to when this began or starts becoming more frequent. It’s a mild annoyance, but I’d like to get rid of it.

    Running Windows 10
    HP Pavilion 15z-cw100
    Ryzen 5 3500U w/ Radeon Vega 8 Graphics Card; 256GB SSD; 16GB DDR4 RAM.
I keep my laptop updated (though have not ruled out potential driver issues) and have my power plan set to high performance if that makes any difference.

I’m generally inexperienced with computers beyond basic functions, so please bear that in mind – I might need things explained like I’m 5. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

I think it’s more likely to be a software issue than a hardware issue. It’s an interesting puzzle. If I had to solve it, I’d replace the HDD/SDD the laptop has now by a blank SSD to install Windows on from scratch (including all drivers from the makers site) and see if it works.

      – If it doesn’t there’s a good chance it’s hardware.
      – If it does I work, I’ll have to choose between (1) build a new working system on the SSD, (2) see if I could fix it on the old disk (using the same drivers and settings and so on) or (3) accept the current situation.

I think your window is corrupt.
