Why does Win XP freeze when a USB headset is plugged in?

By mmemler ·
The user(s) usually plug in a headset after the program is running and the headset is needed for audio. The P C then freezes and will not respond to keystrokes again until fully rebooted.

Not sure why this is happening

But it could be related to this months Patches from M$ breaking something that worked previously.

You can try removing any patches applied this month and see if that fixes the problem. Of course if there have been no patches applied recently it's not the answer you need.

Is this happening with a new device? Or existing device that never had a problem?
Either way, I would try the usb headset on another xp station to see if the problem can be recreated. If same thing happens, I would lean towards headphone becoming faulty.

I would make sure latest drivers for headset are working, or roll back to a previous one if a new one just been installed. Try switching to usb port, preferably a powered 2.0 port. Also load latest chipset drivers for your motherboard.
