Desktop shortcuts, I get a message the protocol "http" does not have a registered program. I'm running vista IE9 IE shortcut works and i can type in google or yahoo or other sites and they work, but not stand alone shortcuts

Here I'm assuming that in the past it did work so start with the change that was made just prior to these no longer working. Things like applying Patches or installing new software are the obvious things which could cause this to break
then choose Properties from the drop down menu, look at the option "Opens with" and check to be sure your web browser of choice is the default application, if not, then choose it using the button provided. Then click OK to save your choices. Now they should open in your web browser or whichever application you chose.
