why is the character " ? " on my start up screen?

By evilc72 ·
I have an ancient compaq 5wv270.
Actually, nothing is original on/in it. Not even the box or the mb. But the mb is the manufactures replacement. So we'll have to call it that, for a lack of anything better to call it.

I have recently been getting the character ? in the middle of my start up screen about 2/3 of the way over to the right on the monitor.

When I say the start up screen, I mean the black screen from bios.

Any idea why?

It is kind of bugging me.

Thank you!

P.S. the character that is making an appearence on my monitor is not a question mark "?" as it shows here. For some reason this aplication is changing it. The character is an " a " with a dash over it that goes northeast, providing north is up.

Does your computer bootup ok?..

by Peconet Tietokoneet In reply to why is the character " ? ...

What operating system are you using?
Win 3.5?
If you have a look in your BIOS settings you might see that you have a "boot splash screen" that is check marked, if it is. just disable it.

Win XP

by evilc72 In reply to Does your computer bootup ...

I have XP.

I have been in the BIOS a ton of times and never remember seeing a setting to enable and or disable the splash screen which is the red "compaq".

Yes it seems to boot up OK. I suppose I could be getting an extra flash or 2, (from the flashing bars in the upper corners) without knowing, since I never counted how many there were in the 1st place?

Very limited bios settings in this thing.

I am thinking it might have something to do with the fact that my agp card is going, going / on its way out?

This could very well be related to a failing Video Card

by OH Smeg Moderator In reply to Win XP

But it could just as easily be the Video Cards Splash Screen that starts before the BIOS Splash Screen.

Most of the Compaq Computers do have a BIOS Splash Screen which displays the Compaq Logo instead of showing the BIOS Steps like the POST Screen followed by the computer identifying the HDD and so on.

If this Video Card was added after the unit was purchased it could just as easily be the Computer displaying a message that the Video Card is working and identifying the Video Card itself or at least a Code that the Video Card is working correctly.

You mean this

Yeah, you can't use regular extended characters in this forum for about a year. Must use the HTML entities.

"?" <<< that is what I mean!

It shows up in the middle and about 2/3 of the way to the rignt of my all black boot screen. (before windows)

And my added / upgraded agp card is starting to fail.

Then it is probably caused by the failing AGP.

by seanferd In reply to yes

If you ever find the need to post an "extended" character here (or somewhere else which disallows them), just look up "html entities". They have lists of these things.

á = & aacute ; (remove the spaces).
