The example I’ll cite is not an example of ‘political’ impact on Canada, but it DOES show just how immediate the US economy reflects on Canada, and in this case OIL, which US foreign policy is very much an influence on.
Hurricane Ike made a brief tour stop in Texas, with instantly devastating effect before heading up to Canada. In the time leading up to the hurricane hitting Texas, US oil production was effected.
In Vancouver, we saw an instant hike at the pump of 15 cents per litre, (46 cents per gallon). How?
We supply 60% of the US’ imported oil.
When production is threatened in the US, demands skyrocket. Oil pricing is all based on consumption and drilling predictions, a loose science at best.
So when the US supply is threatened, the US comsumption of foreign oil increases and lo and behold, your suppliers have to tighten their belts. In this case, to the tune of 15 cents per litre for Canadians.
Now, I am not complaining about gas prices,I know this has NOTHING to do with Bush (for once) I understand how horrible this event was and hope for the safety and well being of anyone that is effected.
I am not trying to minimize anything but simply to show many peers here exactly WHY Canadians are so concerned about who you elect.
I have been told countless times that it doesn’t matter what Canadians think and why don’t we all mind out own business because it is none of our business who you elect.
Well this is exactly why we care who you elect and exactly why we are focused on what the US does in foreign, oil producing countries.
Supply and demand. We supply, you demand.
THAT’s why it matters to us.
