Why no share option in drop down menu

By drl ·
I cannot get a sharing option on some mobile NT computers (Field Works) when I right click a drive. Server service will not run properly it seems and other things are normal otherwise. But there is simply no option to share under admin or any logon. These are NT 4.0 workstations, service pack 5.

Try this:

Right mouse Network Neighborhood, click properties. Select the Services tab. Uninstall the "Server" service reboot then repeat the same process except, install the "Server" service. Go into the services control manager and start the "Server" service. Make sure it's start up is set to automatic.

Sounds to me that you may have installed the NICs after installing the Service Pack. Try re-installing the service pack. Also, make 100% sure that you have File and Printer sharing enabled in Network Control Panel.

The Server service provides the "sharing" feature. Until you get that running you will not have the option to share files or printers. The probable reason is as stated in answer 2: Network support was added after the service pack was installed. If network support is added after SP3 or higher is installed the server service will fail to start. You should reapply SP5 or update to the latest SP6a. That should fix the problem.
