Why no video but audio ok

by rckowal . Updated 16 years, 5 months ago

O.S. is Windows XP Media Center Edition (same as XP Pro with extras).

When I playback known good commercial &/or home movie DVDs using Windows Media Player 11 for XP SP2 or RealPlayer 11, I can hear the audio OK but there is no video.

If I playback the same DVDs on the same PC using VLC Media Player, or a stand alone Sony DVD player, both video & audio play OK.

When playing back movie files stored on my HDD, both W.M.P. & RealPlayer will play both video & audio in AVI files but will not play the video if the file is an MPEG. I’ve checked the codecs of the movie files using GSpot &/or Mediaifo utilities. Both report that MPEG 2 is installed & no codecs are missing.

Both Windows Media Player & RealPlayer were working fine until very recently. In the meantime, my PC encountered problems so I had to restore it from a recently saved Acronis BackUp. There were also some registry issues concerning video editing software that had to be dealt with as well.

I’ve been trying to fix this problem for several days now without sucess. What?s going on here & how can I fix it?

Best regards, Richard
