Why won’t Sound card set to correct IRQ?

    by goodwin2000 ·

I was tring to install an upgrade soundcard to the one I have now. The card was seated correctly, and O/S was configured to use Automatic settings, but when I went to install the driverrs I kept getting an error message saying that the sound card IRQ was routed incorrectly. I checked Device Manager and found that IRQ12 was being used(this should be for PS/2 mouse.

Can anyone tell me why this may happen?

First – is this a PCI card? if so, check to see what’s going on with your PCI steering. If this is an EISA card, you’ll have to configure the IRQ yourself – using the Device Manager in System Properties would be the easiest way. Uncheck Automatic settings, and use an IRQ that doesn’t conflict, which may be a problem in and of itself if all your IRQs are being used.

I’ll second that answer. additionaly, if you didn’t blow away all references to the old sound card when you put the new one in the OS probably tried to put it somewhere else than in the old spot. thats my $0.02

Sounds like you might have had an eisa card
and the new one is a Pci card.
There are a number of issues.
First of all check your bios to see if the
Plug and play is in operation, also check
if the Irq routing in the bios is set to
automatic ormanual. If its manual, each
pci slot is assigned an Irq address. you can’t plug in a card and assign it a different irq to the one assigned to the slot. Also did you completely remove the old
card and drivers in the control panel.
You can also check to see what resources are available ie irq’s dma’s ports etc. In the
      control panel\Device manager\view devices by
      connection\computer\properties. This will
also tell you if the old sound card still has
      an irq assigned to it.

Most Pci cardsare plug and play and the settings are done automatically.

If you are using NT however, NT does not support plug and pray as we call it.

      BE CAREFUL WITH LINUX.
      Cheers Bud.
