Wi-Fi Connection Slower on a Brand New Device

    by mawgandagley ·

    Hi All,

I’ve just bought myself a new Acer Aspire A515-55 but I seem to be having some internet speed issues and need some help in trying to sort it out. When connected to my home wifi, on the new laptop I am hardly reaching 20mbps internet download speeds with an average of about 15mbps download (10 Upload).
This for me is a little bit concerning when all other devices on the same network are receiving speeds of up to 50-70mbps download.

The problem persists even when there are no other devices connected and I have deactivated any security software to see if that makes a difference, which it does not.

As a bit of background, I initially couldn’t get anything faster than 5mbps, but after disabling the ‘802. 11n/ac/ax Wireless mode’, (now only the ‘802.11a/b/g mode is activated’) I had it peak up to what it is now.

Any and all assistance/tips would be greatly appreciated!

    For reference:
    Wifi band: 5GHz
    Laptop Specs: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-1065G7 CPU @ 1.30GHz 1.50 GHz
    Network Adapter (I think): Intel(R) Wi-Fi 6 AX201 160 MHz

If this isn’t a location issue (meaning: your laptop is far away from the WiFi router or access point, and all those other devices are nearby) and they all use the same 5GHz band this seems a warranty issue. Contact the shop or Acer customer service and complain.

It makes some sense to switch the router to 2.4 Ghz and compare the speed again. Just as experiment, of course.
Also it makes sense to check the speed at another WiFi, say a friend or family member, where you can compare it with their devices and your own phone.
Do both before you contact the shop or Acer. It makes your call much more convincing if it’s the same bad performance always and everywhere.

Is the internet working fine on other devices?
      I will suggest:
      1. Try changing the band to the wifi your device is connected to.
      2. Check for software updates.
      3. Contact the customer support and see if there is an issue with your connection or the internal hardware
