WifiMapper app - getting feedback from the 'techy' crowd

By ellie3 ·
Hi everyone,

I wanted to get the pulse and feedback of the IT community with regard to our new app that we've just released called WifiMapper. It's designed to help people find free wifi anywhere in the world, where we've built up a database of crowdsourced hotspots from our original app, OpenSignal (over 500 million).

Although we can automatically detect if a password is required to connect, determining if it's free or not is another challenge as there are plenty of non password protected walled-garden hotspots and plenty of (what we consider) free hotspots where you still need to find out the password (e.g. cafes, restaurants etc). We've built an algorithm that looks at a number of heuristics of each hotspots, such as the SSID including certain key words, e.g. free, cafe etc, and the place type, e.g. hotel etc., to estimate whether it is free or not, however we also want to open it up to the community to provide feedback to confirm or edit the hotspots to let us know if they're free.

We're trying to understand if that would typically be the 'techy' community, i.e. people who frequent forums such as this, or perhaps a wider audience.

It would be great to get any feedback from the community here as to whether this is something they would ever be interested in providing feedback on, and generally if anyone has any thoughts on using heuristics to built learning algorithms to determine if hotspots are free or not.

Many thanks,
