will formating erase a virus?

By northwood ·
If I format my hard drive, will that eliminate or render a virus in-operative?

How about if I re-partition the hard drive? Will that get rid of a virus?

It depends on the virus, and what areas of the system it infects.

You can look up detailed information on the virus at either Symantec's or McAfee's web sites.

Most viri will be gone with the repartition if you use a write protected boot floppy, and run a 3 phase fdisk.
Delete all logical drives and partitions
Boot
Run fdisk /mbr
Boot
Partition the drive.

Some viri infect the BIOS itself.
To get rid of them,
Clear CMOS,
Flash the BIOS
Clear CMOS again

Some viruses are memory resident and therefore can't be done away with by formatting. If you have ran anti-virus software, but it can't remove the virus, you should at least know the name of the virus. Go to www.sarc.com and search for more info. about the virus. Many times they will have removal tools for the tougher viruses.

Good luck,
Don

Formating the hard drive may get rid of the virus BUT it will also get rid of you OS (windows) you data

1) Install an Anti-virus program like Nortons AV
2) Scan all local harddrives and removable media (floppy, LS120, CDR/RW, Zip, etc)

*1 Only if the AV program cannot get rid of the virus should you consider the next steps
*2a And only if you have the Backup CDROMs for Windows, and all the Drivers for the hardware, and Aplications like OFFICE and a BACKUP program.

*2b If you have notgot these BACKUP CDROMS then you cannot use the system once formated, you'll need to buy them again..

*3 and also have backups for your data on removeable media which is virus free

*4 You do have a basic understanding of DOS I hope!

*5 Check your boot disk has FDISK FORMAT SYS if not create one with a virus free system (friends) using a fresh blank floppy disk and copy them to it

1)If the virus cannot be removed by the AV Program or AV bootdisk

Gather together your Windows CDROM Boot disk and Serial Number, Driver Disks, AVboot disk and CDROM, Backup Program disk

* Boot system with Windows boot disk to enter DOS
* Use FDISK to remove All partision from the drive then restart, create a primary partision and set active then restart.
* format drive C (FORMAT C: /U)
* boot the AVBoot disk to check there is no virus
* Using the Windows CDROM install Windows (follow instruction in manaul)
* Enter Serial number for windows when asked
* Install System Drivers from Driver Disks
* Install AV Program
* Scan all local hard drives
* scan Backup data disks
* scan all other media
!! It might sound repetertive but some viruses hide them selfs from to AV Scanner when the system is not clean booted
* Install Back up program
* Restore backup data
* scan everything again
If no virus found your done...
Now when you recieve a disk/CDROM/Download
BACKUP YOUR DATA
scan it before you use it

* How do you know you have a virus?
* Do you have data which you need to keep?
* Have you made any backups of your critical data before you found the virus?
* Have you installed an Anti-virus Program?
