Win 2000 and losing network connection

By jdonovan51 ·
Hello... I some older AMD K62 300 MHZ to 500 MHZ machines, and I have installed Windows 2000. The network connection will drop out, and I will lose access to the domain after X amount of packets sent/recieved. If I reboot the connect of course is established until the next drop out. This problems only seems to reside on a couple of machines. Any one have an idea what can cause this problem?

Hi,
This will seem a bit simplistic, but I had a problem with some IBM Netfinity servers whereby the comms would 'lock' after a certain amount of time. It turned out that there was an issue with the win2k provided driver for the nics, and the problem went away after I updated the nic drivers. Might be worth a look.....

I had a similar problem. It turned out to be my little 4 port switch. Try ping the domain controller from the workstations to see if you get packet errors. I used ping in the following way:
ping -n 100 'ip address' or 'computer name'

This command will ping the server 100 times. In my case I never got better than 67%. This helped me isolate the defective switch.

I have faced same problem with Novell SBS server. Where peer to peer windows network will work absolutly fine. But when you try to work with novell remote boot, it will give intermetent connection. Some of the computers work & some do not. Finally it was resolved by replacing cables.
If possible check with cable tester for connectivity. RJ45 manula crimping may be problem. Try to use pre crimped cables.

Good luck
