WIN 2000 PROFESSIONAL - Windows Explorer

By yash_mhaskar ·
Why does Opening My Computer or opening windows explorer or looking for files/folders in WORD or EXCEL or any program takes lots of time? I have a 20 GB Hard Drive partitioned in 5 GB each. The first four partitions are only formatted.

Check to see how many programs you have in the startup menu.
How much memory do you have?
Do you have the antivirus scanning your programs at startup.
Disable the power management to see if this will help.
A number of things could be causing this to happen and what OS are you running.
Opem Device Mananger and check the Preforamance tab to see if the system is running at optimal performance.

As poer the previous answer, I saw this once when someone had configured their AntiVirus detection into "paranoid" mode, in that it virus checked ALL the files it tried to open. Therefore, all exe's etc. that had icons in them that were to be displayed caused it to virus check them. To make things woorse in this particular case, they used server based virus checking, so everything was sent to the server for checking!
