Win 2000 Server won't install

By rsiegfried ·
Trying to install Win 2000 server on new HD. Drive formated, will install any other OS (except 2000 Pro and Server) without problem.

DOS portion of install goes OK, when rebooting to do second half of install, indicates checking hardware and goesblack.

AMD Athlon 900Mhz on ASUS A7V MB

Several others, including experienced tech try but likewise fail. AMD and ASUS claim no known compatability issues.

Any ideas or similar experiences??

Thanks

Win 2000 Server won't install

AMD has no issues with W2K Pro, Server is a whole other matter. I've run that OS on an AMD 900 Abit board as well. I doubt it is your proc or Mobo. First thing is to ensure that ALL of your hardware is compatible with W2K. There are a number of devices that do not work with this OS. The fact that your display goes black leads me to believe that you may have a display adapter compatibility issue. Check here for all your hardware: http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/server/howtobuy/upgrading/compat/default.asp to ensure complete compatibility.

Hope this helps and Good Luck!

If the motherboard has on-board audio or installed audio card and it is enabled it can cause Win 2000 not to install it gives a black screen (It happened to me) Disabling the on-board sound or removing the audio card allows it to install. Then re-enable or install audio card and allow Windows to find it. Note sometimes but not allways it gives a message about a hardware fault, and it happens mainly with on-board sound.

I think answer number 3 is correct. (If so, accept his answer, not mine.)

I'm upgrading my entire office to Win2k Pro, and many BIOSes have to be updated for the new OS.

Win 2000 Server won't install

I believe that this is the problem of detection of high capacity hard drive (more than 8 GB) when you install win 2k on dubal boot machine.

I hope the below article on microsoft site will help you to resolve the problem.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q197667&

Plz let me know if this works.
