Are your workstations pointing at your Windows DNS servers?

If you are using DHCP on your Windows server, is your scope setup properly to push the DNS suffix and name servers to your XP workstations? Run ipconfig /all on your workstations to see this info. Is your DNS integrated with AD and setup for secure updates only? Do you have SRV resource records in your DNS zone?

The answers to these questions will determine where your problem lies, but it is definitely DNS related because DNS is the core service behind a properly functioning AD domain setup.
