Win 2k and Athlon compatibility

By billboles ·
I have 2 computers. Both have 700 MHz Athlon processors, 512 Mb of Ram, and over 6Gb of free disk space. I recently upgraded them from Windows 98 to Windows 2000 Professional.

All was well for about 1 week. My CD burning software (Nero) suddenly became VERY slow. When I go to add jpeg images to the CD, the file list would display items at about 1 file every 3 seconds. With a lot of image files this is very aggravating.

I reinstalled Windows 2000 and the problem went away for about a week and then returned.

I installed Easy CD creator and everything was, again, fine for about one week. Jpegs are once again the issue. Tif images or any other type of file pose no problem; they display immediately.

This is happening onboth of my machines. I have no other software running at the time I am burning the CD. Restarting does not help. I have uninstalled my virus software to see if that made any difference. It didn't.

I even scoured the AMD website to see if a Bios upgrade was in order to run Windows 2000 but was unable to find one.

Do I have to buy a Pentium? Help!

Win 2k and Athlon compatibility

I personally run 3 amd workstations from home and I service/sell quite a few more and I have never had an issue with windows2000 itself with these puters. If everything else runs fine, I would suspect your burning software. Are you sure you are installing win2000 compatible versions and not the software you got with your win98 machine? In many cases the software will be different.
Good luck!

I've tried other burning software with the same results.

Are you using the latest drivers from the motherboard/chipset mfg, or the default W2K drivers?

Try downloading and installing the chipset drivers. Also, update the video driver.

Make sure you have the latest patches from www.roxio.com for the Adaptec software.

How much free hard drive space do you have?
This can also have an impact on CD recording.

I am running XP on a 900MHz Athlon with no problems, after installing appropriate updates.

Oh, a BIOS upgrade if needed would come from your motherboard mfg, not AMD.

Thank you! I'll check the motherboard manufacturer's website.
I've already done roxio and I've got over 6Gb of free drive space. I don't think the video driver is the culprit since it's only the jpegs causing a problem but I will look into it as well.
