Win 2K Client - DNS intermittent

By dpenrod ·
All my Win 2k clients in an NT 4.0 domain have intermittent problems with DNS. My web server sits is a DMZ. Sometimes Win2K clients correctly resolve the DMZ address and can ping the web server. Sometimes they resolve to the external firewall address for our web server, (as though they are bypassing our internal DNS server and accessing our ISP's DNS server) which they cannot access since they are inside the firewall. Since Win2K uses Dynamic DNS, I must be missing something in the DNS orClient setup? And ideas?

Win 2K Client - DNS intermittent

Make sure the only DNS servers configured in DHCP (or manually)are the internal ones.
Let the internal DNS servers do the lookup for zones not in their own zone (simply delete the root (.) zone), or use them as forwarding dns servers to a dns server provided by your provider. This way the client can not bypass your dns servers, and wil get the right ip address of your web server (provided it is corectley configured in your primairy dns server).
If you're not sure what the configured dns servers are, try a ipconfig /all.

You should be alright then.

Good luck.

Sorry I almost forgot, there is no dynamic DNS in a NT4 domain, so all you have to take cvare off, is to configure your static dns entrys correct.

This fixed me. Now I need to setup a backup DNS server inside my domain.
