Win 2k having problem recognise new H/W

By Exp ·
I have a PC with windows 2000 and SP2. For some reason since late march my win2k will take forever to recognise a new modem or any hardware. It seems like the OS is having problem with pnp part of it. It will boot and I can login ok but when it try to install the new driver it will take forever I once left it for 4 hours and it still didn't finish. I have re-installed using the ERD. Also notice the service.exe is runing at close to 100% CPU usage. Normally this file does not run at all.

Win 2k having problem recognise new H/W

this one sounds like dirvers conflict. win2k is known for being picky when it comes to HW and there drivers. refer to HCL from mocfrsoft web site. Also that might be caused by some 3rd party software. I would uninstall all the drivers and reinstall them once at a time to find out the defective one. it is not always true what the manufactures claim that their H/W are win2000 compatable.

anther common problem is one HW driver is conflicting with another HW driver.if you uninstall the drivers, start with the latest one that you install till you find the cause.

Don't think it caused by one particular driver. I do think there is some part of the OS is corrupted. I have tried 3 different modems, 3 AGP cards. Changed m/b with the same model and rev no. and still it doesn't work properly. Thanks for your help anyway.

It's perhaps a conflict between the PnP settings of your motherboard and Win2K. Worth checking the BIOS settings, I would say.
