WIN 2k m/c in NT network

By Achat ·
I have a WIN 2k Professional laptop which does not login to the NT network. When i try to add it to the network thru network id wizard i get an error that the credentials are clashing with existing credentials. The computer however does not appear on the server manager screen of my NT PDC.
The network is available in the win2k m/c thru network neighbourhood.

When you're adding the laptop to a domain, and then you are prompted with entering a 'user who can log into the existing domain', make sure you enter an account that is able to log into the NT domain. If you want it to be the same account you use on the laptop, then you'll have to create it on the domain first.

Quintar51,
The account i am trying to give is the admin account and still i am getting the error. Secondly the computer was appering in the NT m/c server mgr. i have deleted it under the assumption that the error was due to the fact the i was trying to creata an account from the Win2k m/c for an existing account. But even after deletion the error is the same.

Make sure that you do not have any mapped drives or printers on the domain.

You can not add a computer to a domain if any mapped drives are in use.

What is the computer name you are using? Make absolutely certain that no other computers are using that same computer name. Also know that in NT Server only the first 14 (maybe 12) characters are recognized and if the computer name exceeds the maximum number of characters, you can get errors like that.

Another thing to try is the old take the computer off of the domain (rejoin Workgroup), reboot, change computer name, reboot, rejoin domain and reboot again. That always seemed to work for us.

We experienced this sort of problem when we moved from Win95 to Win2000, but our servers were still NT. Somehow, it seems that the computer name gets "stuck" (for lack of a better word) in NT without appearing anywhere. Taking it off of the domain and rebooting, changing the name, rebooting, etc. always worked.

The computer name is only 10 chars long -both old and new names. Did change the name but still does not work.
