Win 2k pro not letting you log off

I am the help desk technician for Naval hospital. We are currently using dell pc’s with win 2k pro as os. Recently I have encountered users calling saying they are not able to log off. No error message. When they hit ctrl alt dlt or when they hit start logoff pc does not respond. Mouse is still responding.Only solution I have found is by shutting down pc. Anyone have any situation like this and if so what was the solution.

Has a GPO been placed on the workstations not allowing them to logoff?

no. it has not. The problem is intermittent. It just seems to effect some pc’s but not all.

I am going to assume that the systems have been scanned for viruses and malware. Are the users using roaming profiles?

What services are running on the workstations when they lockup?

What Service Pack revision is on the systems?

Check this out:
1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click System.
3. On the Network Identification tab, click Change.
4. In the Network Identification Wizard, click Next.
5. Click This computer is for home use and not part of a business network
6. Click Users must enter a user name and password.
7. Click Next, and then click Finish.

Or it sounds like it is having problems unloading the current profile/registry hive. Check the following link to use the MS program to see if that’s the problem. Do you have roaming profiles?
