We have a client running sbs 4.5 on his network, and using a laptop both on the local network and via ras access. this has worked ok for a short time.
Now when the user dials in to the server , the laptop logs in and authenticates, but it cannot see any machines on the network ( including the server, it is the only machine shown my network places, although it is in the correct domain. )
If the we ping the servers ip address we get connection timed out, if we ping servers netbios name it returns the correct ip address, but ping still times out. In ipconfig on laptop we are getting a correctly assigned ip address, subnet mask of 255.255.255.255 and gateway is same as ppp ip address ( I belive the ip for gateway is correct for ppp ras connections, I am concerned about the subnet mask however ).
On the server in ras manager we get a confirmed connection from laptop showing connected and authenticated, and the laptops netbios name is shown but we cannot browse to the laptop and if we ping its ip we get host not found, if we ping its netbios name we get the servers ip address returned with a successful ping.
We have reinstalled ras on the server, and reconfigged dial up on the laptop, added the server ip in lmhost file on the laptop, have disabled the on board lan adaptor on laptop ( I have come across a problem with lan and wan adaptors connecting to the same network before ). None of these have helped.
Since install of sbs 4.5 on server someone has installed wins service ( client denies any knowledge of this ) can this affect ras dial in in this way?
I have tried a dial in from another win 2k client with the same results.
server is set up for ras dial in on an isdn card and via an external modem, problem exists on both connections.
