Win 2K Sp3

by Joseph Moore In reply to Win 2K Sp3

I've been running SP3 since the day it came out last week, and so far so good.
I read a thread on another web site about SP3, and several people had reported no problems. The only concern one person posted was that they were running a sniffer on the machine with SP3, and they were noticing that the machine was trying to report to Microsoft information, similar to the way XP registers itself to Microsoft. So, I am not sure if SP3 has this same "phone-home" technology that XP does, but I think it is something to keep an eye on.
Now, as for your problem, did you disable anti-virus software before running the service pack? That might have caused a problem.
I would boot into Safe Mode, remove SP3, boot normally, make sure everything is ok, then try the SP3 install again. But make sure nothing is running when the install starts.

hope this helps

I found some clarification on the reporting that SP3 is doing now:

So, it is actually the new Windows Update that is sending some data to Microsoft, including the "version numbers of other software". Why does Microsoft care which version of MusicMatch I have installed on my new SP3-patched system????
Not sure if I am really comfortable with this.
