Win 2K Start Menu Problem

By Bob.Giesen ·
I have a user with a Dell Latitude 500 Laptop running Windows 2000 Professional.

When the user removes the workstation from the Network, does a re-boot, logs on, and then clicks on the Start Menu, there is no response. (Left Click or right click)

Place the workstation back on the Network, reboot and log on, the start menu is fine.

The behavior is the same whether docked or undocked.

Any ideas on what the problem might be?

Win 2K Start Menu Problem

Robert,
I wasn't clear on how and when the laptop was being shutdow, but try this (if you haven't already)
Shutdown the laptop while it is still connected (physically) to the network.
Unplug the network cable (or undock the laptop)
Turn the laptop back on. This should allow you to login to the local machine and use the Start Menu.
I experienced the same problem on one of our Dell laptops. The user was unplugging the network cable, then shutting down the machine. For some reason, this cause the user big problems. Once they started shutting down in the proper order, the problem went away.

If that doesn't work, try using a "Docked" and "Undocked" profile. I've had to do that for several users, also. (The docked profile has the network setting, the undocked does not) This takes longer to setup, but is worth the headache it saves.

Good luck.
Chris
