Win 98 CONTENT ADVISOR

By karmelkids ·
My friend can't get on the web. How do I disable the "content advisor". And, how do I change the supervisor password if we have no clue what it is/was, my friends dad didn't write it down.
Need to turn this thing OFF, or reset the password so wecan be allowed to access all websites.
Thx, marilyn

Hi, on internet options in control panel, go to "content," click on enable for "content advisor" and on the tab that says "general" you'll see supervisor password. You should be able to change the password there and reset or eliminate content controls. The very worst case scenario would be to uninstall IE under add/remove programs and download and reinstall it again. Good luck.

Thx, however this remedy didn't work. Doing the uninstall/reinstall process won't fix the problem either. Was told the password is stored on another site, not on the pc.
Thx Again,
marilyn

Uh, Marilyn, I don't want to be the grinch that stole Christmas, but as a Dad with six kids who surf the Web, I couldn't help wondering if we should really be helping you bypass something your friend's Dad put in place out of concern for his kid.Just a thought from one of those not-quite-human, kill-joy parental units....

Good point and I agree with you and would of asked the same question myself before proceeding to help. It was all okay, it was her father who gave her the pc to use and she's an adult. They ended up having to just go and purchase a new pc. Thx for trying to help out. marilyn

There's not really and easy way to do this. Generally, I've seen people use either a blank in there. The same password they use to log into windows, their email password, the password they use to dialup to the ISP.

You may be able to just blowout the content advisor reg keys and then reload IE (export them first just in case you have to reapply them)

Hope this helps you.

(2) Click Content tab.
(3) Click on Enable button.
(4) From Ratings tab, click Language and slide the button on the horizontal bar all the way to the left. Repeat this to all three ratings caterogies, Nudity, Sex and Violence.
(5) Click the General tab. Uncheck the square box for "Supervisor can type a password to allow users to view restricted content.
(6) Click OK to save and close the Enable settings.
(7) Click OK to save all modifications.
Restart Internet Explorer for changes to take effect.

Enjoy!

In order to disable the Content Advisor from IE5 after it's password protected:

Go to Start
<Run>
Type <regedit>
<HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>
<SOFTWARE>
<MICROSOFT>
<WINDOWS>
<CURRENT VERSION>
<POLICIES>
<RATING>
If the value is set, delete
<CLOSE REGISTRY>

Start IE5 and be sensible, visit sites that you know your father would approve. Enjoy!
