Win-98 Device Manager

By blinmdd ·
When in a safe mode in Win-98, under ControlPanel/System/Device Manager/HD controller, I got 5 lines of each :
- primary IDE controller
- secondary IDE controller.
Want to get rid of them.System doesn't allow
us to do that.

You must remove the bus master IDE controller, and it will remove all the hard drives. On next reboot, the drives will be redetected.

the 1st answer to your question is correct.. any duplicates in safe mode are not good for your system... removing the ide controllers bus masters wil not remove your hard drive... win98 will just re-create them!!

I assume you are the system administrator to do this, otherwise you can't.

In device manager, highlight the multiple entries one by one, and click remove. If the prompt asks for reboot, say no until you are done, then reboot. (make sure all are removed.) Then reboot.

Windows then will reasign the proper IRQ's and hopefully this remedies your malady.

You can go using regedit, not Device Manger!

Delete keys under

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum\MF]

Make sure to export the key before deleted, Just In case....

Windows will recreate it on reboot.

Thanks.
