Win 98 Downloads

By pzhamilton ·
I run Win 98 and connect to the internet using dial up. When I try to download any programs such as games, msn messenger etc I get no response the and the page stops loading. I can't figure out the problem. I do not have a firewall installed. What could be the problem?

Have you tried repairing Internet Explorer, or Installing a newer version.
If you go to Add/Remove programs control panel and choose internet explorer and click Add/Remove it should give you the option to repair it(as long as it is IE5 or IE6.

You don't say what version of IE that you are using but if it 5.5SP2 or above then it may be a non-ActiveX plugin. Look at the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/software/microsoft/internet
explorer/plugin/extensions/.exe

If it's there you'll need to delete it. You can check to see what app added it and see if there is an upgraded ActiveX plugin to replace it. Something like an older version of QuickTime from Apple can cause this.

According to MS this is by design. Check out this kb:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;q303401&

If this isn't the issue let us know.

Enjoy,
