Locked

Win 98 Freezes

By akstephr ·
I have a Dell Optiplex 500Mhz P3 computer with 64 mg of RAM. Intermittantly it will lock up. The only way to "fix" it is to power it down by holding in the power button for 10-15 seconds. It can do this when only one program is running and the computer has only been on for 5 minutes, or it can do this after the computer has been on for 3 days and has 4 open programs. I stopped the graphic accelorator, but it had no affect. Does anyone have any ideas, hints, etc? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also, just so you know, I have cleaned the cookies, temp files, and temp internet files. I have scan disked and defraged. The performance tab in system properties sits at **% free with no open programs, and 83% with IE 6 open.

What else could it be?

Check the anti-virus configuration while it is running in the background

Screen Savers will cause this problem

You may want to disable Power Management and Fast Find to see if this will eliminate the problem

Check the memory module to make sure that it has not crept out of the slot and while you are at clean the contacts.

Update the Graphics card drivers

This is a hard one to troubleshoot. How long has the PC been doing this? What software/hardware have you installed? Personally, I would begin by getting the latest drivers and running any patches, windows updates avail. Next, I would start removing until I found my culprit.

This one seems to be making a resurgence. Please check the symantec site here and see if any of these symptoms sound familiar...http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.magistr.24876@mm.html

Do you get any error messages at bootup saying certain .DLL files are missing? This could be your culprit.
Good luck!

Mike
