    WIn 98 logon problem

    Locked

    by ian_koegelenberg ·

I’ve got 3 pc’s on my network that keep on giving me a hard time. When win98 boots up it doesnt show me the login “screen”

    user name *****
    password *****
    domain *****

It just enters windows but as soon as you say logoff and then logon again then the login screen appears and you can then logon to the network.

I’ve checked all the setting and they are the same as all the other pc’s on the network.

Can you please help me with this one

There are two reasons for this to happen:

      1. The first time it was logged in a blank password was used. In this case, removing all *.pwl files from the Windows directory will stop the auto logon.
      2. There was a problem with the preinstallation of Windows and you have to do a complete reinstall. This has happened to me twice where 1. wasn’t the fix so I had to reinstall (after hours of troubleshooting–including registry searching for the phantom user).

Good luck and hopefully it is just the first one.

If you search the registry, you should find a value titled something to the effect of “autologon”. Just search for “autolog” and you should find it. Change it to equal “0” and reboot. That should fix your problem.

Find “autologin” in the windows Registry and delete the key. After that, restart your computer and the network login windows will appear.

Try this method first. If it doesn’t work, use my method above.

Run regedit and do a search for autologon. Set the value to 01. This should solve your problem.

Are these systems part of an NT Domain? If not why domain? If no NT then set to Quick Logon. If not NT and you do not need multiple profiles for these machines and security is not an issue then you don’t really need a Windows Network Logon. If not, delete all .pwl files and then right click Network Neighborhood and change Windows Network Logon to Windows Logon. When asked to reboot say No. Go to My Computer\Control Panel\Passwords\User Profiles and set to All Users Use Same Preferences. Reboot, when prompted for password just hit ok.
