Win '98 machine not showing up in Netwk

By sblades ·
I have a mix of '95 and a couple of '98 workstations on a small 10-node, through a hub peer-to-peer. One of the '98 stations needs to be accessed by one of the '95. All of the computer names show up in net neighborhood except one (only one) of the'98 machines and it's the one I need to show up. Yes, I have File and Print Sharing started, same workgroup, everything the same, tried Netbeui, TCP/IP, reinstalled all networking, have drive shared, changed network card, to no avail. TCP/IP settings are correct (subnet, etc.) I've never seen this before and am pulling my hair out. Also have tried LanMan announce, Master Browser disabled, enabled. The '98 stations can see all others fine, but no one can see hers. She is logged in correctly, too. Help.

Not really an answer, but some other things to check. If you do a Find Computer can you see it? What version of 98? If original, have you applied service packs? Are you getting a link light at the hub (bad cabling)?

Couple of things to try:

Try pinging the computer from another workstation. If it doesn't respond, then your IP is setup incorrectly. Check your default gateway, subnet mask, etc..

Try connecting to the computer using UNC (\\computername). If this doesn't work, you might have a bad network card.

If your network is not working (you can't ping other people from the PC), check all the hardware i.e. all cabling and sockets - replace with a known working connection, hub - I've seen hubs with one bad port on them, network card - swap it with one from a working machine and see if the problem follows it.

If you are certain the network is working, my only suggestion is to check that the user has actually shared some resources. Computers don't show up in net neibourhood unless there is something on them (a directory or printer) shared.

from another machine on the network do a ping. Just because it is not in Network Neighborhood doesn't mean it isn't there. Also check your workgroups. Also the machine that you can not see, Can it see the others? Is there an IP conflict? NetBuiInstalled?
