Win 98 Possible downloaded Update

By karmel ·
Recently I had to restore my whole system, what a pain, anyway after I was done restoring I downloaded Explorer 5.0. I also downloaded updated info my sp advised me to get (ATT). Now, at the bottom of my desktop, between the "Start", button and the sys tray I keep getting all of these little boxes that say different things like..Inbox, MyHel (I posted another message here), ~~W~~, etc. What are these new boxes and how do they work. Is this an update from the Explore downld I did when installing 5.0 or is it from MS Outlook Express?? I'm clueless. Pl help me out. Thx

Hi, outlook express is notorious for doing this. Usually you'll see microsoft's little blue e (maybe three or four icons). You should be able to right click on them and delete them unless you think those shortcuts will be of use to you.

This is one of the features installed by Internet Explorer. These little "boxes" are shortcuts like the ones you created on your desktop. You can move you current shortcuts or add new ones here instead of having them all over you desktop and block out your beautiful bitmap or desktop picture.

If don't want this feature, uninstall internet explorer and reinstall it with minimal installion option

Sounds like you're referring to the QuickStart Bar, only the icons/files are corrupted. You could uninstall/reinstall IE5, but that may not help, as the files are actually part of Win98. I would right-click on them, and delete. You can then drag anddrop any icons that you want down to the bar, and use it instead of having icons on your desktop (which isn't visible anyway when you have an application open).

if you want to disable this whilst still having IE5 then use this cool utility to swith off active desktop features like the shortcut bar
ftp://ftp.creativelement.com/pub/win98ann/ie-off.exe
alternatively just right click on each item and delete it.

Yes, these Icons are on the Quick Launch addition to the toolbar that IExplorer installs as part of the package. If you want to use the Quick Launch toolbar, but don't want the Shortcut icons that are there, just right-click and select delete. Thendrag and drop the ones you want there. The shortcut icons on the Q.L. are single click shortcuts. They are very useful. If you have a couple of program windows up and need a regularly-used program, instead of minimizing the windows all you have to do is click the shortcut on the Q.L. bar. Now, if you do not want this feature, just right click on a blank section of the Toolbar and move you cursor up to the Toolbars entry and you'll see the available toolbar additions. There you just click Quick Launch to uncheck it and it will be gone. You'll see there you can also add an Address Bar. This is great for directly entering an internet address. This will automatically open IE and go to that page. Hope this helps.
